Artyom Tonoyan, specialist on Iranian studies, today while touching upon the presidential elections in Iran due on May 19, noted that the main rivalry will proceed between the current President Hassan Rouhani and the joint representative of the Conservative wing Ebrahim Raisi. Rest of the candidates withdrew their candidacy. He says not smooth elections are expected, “I think the elections will be transferred to the second phase. There will be little difference in votes; two candidates have equal chances.” As of regional developments, he says, there will be no change irrespective of the fact which candidate is elected. Especially in case of Armenia there aren’t any negative tendencies. According to the words of the specialist on Iranian studies, Iranian Armenians are much respected in the Islamic Republic of Iran, but Iran has its own foreign policy, in particular it relates to the recognition of the Armenian Genocide, “Iranian Armenians have two lawmakers in this country, but we should note, that in political sense the Armenian community is very passive, and has never supported any candidate during elections.” According to the words of Artyom Tonoyan, there is no information on foreign policy in the election projects of two candidates, “The main stress is on inner politics- unemployment, nature protection issues. There is no reflection on the region and on the relations with the RA in particular.”
