Mayoral candidate Zaruhi Postanjyan did not break any law by showing up at a campaign office of the ruling Republican Party of Armenia (HHK) in Yerevan’s Avan district while voting continued in municipal elections in the Armenian capital on Sunday, May 14, says human rights activist Nina Karapetyants. She says that human rights are not protected in Armenia. “The incident proved once again that Armenia is not a safe country even for people who have immunity.” Postanjyan and her daughter entered on May 14 the HHK office in Avan district just the moment when HHK activists were looking through what she described as lists of residents who promised to pay for Yerevan’s incumbent Mayor Taron Margaryan. Seeing the 'unexpected guests' they hid the lists in a drawer and refused to open it. Moreover, they forced Postanjyan and journalists out of the office, saying nobody had the right to enter their office without permission. Zaruhi Postanjyan refused to leave the premises before being dragged away by police officers. It appeared they were going to detain her but changed their mind at the last minute. When justifying their actions, HHK activists said likewise they could break into campaign offices of the rival teams in an attempt to check documents there. “Should Eduard Ashotyan or Armen Ashotyan enter a campaign office of Postanjyan’s Yerkir Tsirani party, the police would not treat them in the same way as they treated Postanjyan,” Nina Karapetyants said. Instead of checking the authenticity of the information given by Postanjyan, the police used force against her. Gohar Arshakyan, a member of the Yerkir Tsirani party, says she saw the injuries inflicted by police officers on Postanjyan and her daughter. “When I saw her bruises, was totally flabbergasted. How can one possibly cause such injuries to another person? Postanjyan’s daughter was examined today and doctors do not say good things about her health,” Gohar Arshakyan said.
