Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary Arman Navasardyan says the constitutional referendum in Turkey held on April 16 can result in serious changes in the country’s foreign policy. "Since 1923, Turkey has had temporal relations with the world, now the country is shifting towards an absolute totalitarian, authoritarian regime. An irreversible event is happening in Turkey's European course. Turkey wants to bring back the death penalty in the country but it will keep the country away from the European country.[President] Erdogan sees himself as the leader of the Sunni world, a sultan, who wants to change the direction of Turkey,” said Mr Navasardyan. “The United States does not attach great importance to this fact while Russia overlooks it, but in vain, given the developments in Syria and the failed honeymoon between Russia and Turkey,” he added. He disagrees with people who believe that the worse the situation gets in Turkey, the better for Armenia. Chaotic situation in Turkey is not advantageous to Armenia, although the country’s autocratic leader, Recep Tayyip Erdogan, will do whatever he wants to do - he will toughen his policy in the Middle East and will attempt to apply the policy of the Ottoman Empire in Syria. Erdogan is a cruel figure and will stand only before Putin. By the way, it is in our interests that Russia and Turkey have good relations,” he said in conclusion.
