“The smallest number of political parties and alliances are participating in general elections for the first time in the 25-year-old history of Armenia,” Republican lawmaker Artak Davtyan said on February 7. He believes that the upcoming elections will differ from the previous ones not only in the number of participating political forces but also in the quality of campaign. “I am not saying this because I am an optimist. I simply think that the new functions envisaged by the new Constitution will dictate new rules of the campaign. They will not throw stones at each other, but will fight for the electorate,” he said citing the example of Heritage Party Leader Raffi Hovannisian. “As an opposition candidate, Raffi Hovannisian gathered the largest number of votes in all presidential elections because throughout the campaign, as I have said, he tried to make his voice audible to Armenian citizens,” the lawmaker said. Artak Davtyan says electoral lists are the main intrigue of elections and parties are deliberately delaying their publication. Speaking about the political alliances formed ahead of the April 2 elections, the Republican lawmaker said they do not have serious ideological programs which is quite natural. Likewise, it is natural to see cooperation between individuals and political forces that have different political courses and ideas. “For example, the Republican Party is a conservative party, yet it does not mean that we reject liberal or socialist ideas. You may see such people on our list.”
