Residents of border village grow bananas and kiwis

Silence reigns everywhere in the border village of Nerkin Karmiraghbyur in Armenia’s Tavush marz. One can see abandoned houses everywhere in the community which had a population of 1000 people in the Soviet period. “Only elderly people and their grandchildren have stayed in the village. Young people are doing seasonal work in Russia. If they stay in the village, they cannot feed their families,” said Grandfather Zhora. “The reason is the war,” he added. karmirax The 78-year-old man lives with his son’s family. They live on the 40000 dram pension that Mr Zhora receives every month. nkarmirax “My son and his wife are unemployed. Can you imagine the situation of a family that lives on pension? I have 4 hectares of fallow lands. We have fertile lands and we would have received more yield but for the war,” he said.
