It has been already two months since a criminal case was instituted connected with the case of use of violence by the police officers against the journalists on Baghramyan Avenue on June 23. “Committee on Protection of Freedom of Speech” addressed questions to the Special Investigation committee in order to clarify the answers to the following questions- how many journalists involved in the case have been interrogated? Is there a suspect involved in the case? How many investigators are conducting the criminal case? According to the words of CPFS President Ashot Melikyan, in reply to these questions, the SIS has sent two letters, “There are only two sentences in the first letter, one reads that criminal case has been instituted, the second reads, “The data, which you claim, are data of preliminary investigation and cannot be published.” The second letter was given the same answer by the SIS,” says Mr. Melikyan. He thinks that there is a problem here, as the law doesn’t define what is considered to be a fact of a preliminary investigation and what cannot be published: “Our colleague lawyers think that it is a gap in the law and based on the answers we will apply to the RA Prosecutor’s Office, and then to the courts in order to see the reaction of the state. Then the lawyers think that it’s worth applying to the Constitutional Court in order to fill the legislative gap.” He thinks that it is because of indifference of the state bodies that every year by different international organizations Armenia appears in the list of the countries lacking freedom of speech.
