“Constitutional amendments are incompatible with EEU membership”
Sociologist Aharon Adibekyan is against new draft Constitution, “As the reason for our problems isn’t the Constitution, we are the problem, we must be law-abiding,” assures the sociologist. He is sure that with the Constitutional amendments the people will be deprived of the right to elect and to be elected, “We will elect a group of deputies, LSB (Local Self-government Bodies) heads, who will elect a president, it means, that our vote won’t be taken into consideration.” According to the assessment of Aharon Adibekyan, with the amendments the opposition will also be deprived of the vote, “If, for example, there is HHK majority in the NA and most of the LSB heads are Republicans, the president will be a Republican and there will be no chance for others.” The Constitutional amendments are also incompatible with Armenia’s membership in the EEU, “If the EEU countries are presidential, why are we parliamentary? It is absurd that our prime minister must negotiate with their presidents.” Last year “Sociometer” independent sociological center carried out a poll in order to find out what the people think of new draft Constitution. 70 percent of the respondents were against, “But at that time there were just rumors, there was no draft.” This year a poll will be carried out in October.
