On July 27 when street protests against the electricity price hike were gaining momentum in Yerevan’s Baghramyan Avenue, Serzh Sargsyan announced that the increase in electricity tariffs will be subsidized by the state, the Union of Informed Citizens said on July 31. However, no information was provided to people about the source of subsidy and the specific layer of the society that will receive these subsidies. The Union of Informed Citizens sent another letter to Yervand Zakharyan, Minister of Energy and Natural Resources who again confirmed that the source of subsidies and the scope of beneficiaries have not been clarified yet. This implies that the Armenian government does not know yet where it will get the money for subsidizing the increased tariffs, even though the new tariffs come into effect tomorrow,” the Union said in a statement.
