The situation has been relatively calm in Syria in the recent week, says Shahan Gantaharyan, chief editor of Beirut-based Azdak daily. Armenians were injured in the attacks but fortunately, we did not have any casualties.  However, we sustained heavy material damage. Armenians are leaving Syria but there are many people who still do not want to abandon their homes. “There are people who want to leave the country but cannot afford the travel costs. Yet, there are many others who prefer to stay in the hope that peace will be established soon,” he said adding that tension remains though the ceasefire in Aleppo. Some Armenians living in the city have received financial assistance by the Armenian Government and will soon move to Armenia. “However, the government should develop long-term programs to help these people settle in Armenia,” Mr Gantaharyan stressed. He also said that a grouping operating in Lebanon under the auspices of Ankara tried to thwart the events arranged in commemoration of the Armenian genocide centennial. “Besides, the Turkmens in Lebanon are financed by Turkey and execute Ankara’s orders. They showed a video about the Battle of Gallipoli which angered representatives of the Armenian Revolutionary Federation (Dashnaktsutyun) and they protested against the move. This result in a brawl between local Armenians and Turkmens,” he said.
