Birth rate in Armenia increase by 3,3 percent in 2014 as compared with 2013, however reproduction has been very slow in the country since 1990s. Armenia faces threat of demographic crisis, experts in the field say. Our fellow citizens are also concerned about statistical data but many cannot afford to have more than two children. Recently elaborated amendments to the Law on Administrative Violations propose administrative sanctions against those who would try to perform sex-selective abortion. It is more important to change people’s mentality and attitude to the phenomenon. If we continue to choose gender-biased sex selection believing that boys are successors of generations, in the 21st century many boys in Armenia will be unable to have children as they cannot find brides. About 2,000 baby girls are not born in Armenia after parents learn the sex of the child.
